A Letter from Iñaki Galdos

Hello to everyone:

First, I would like to thank Michael Brunelle for the opportunity to enter into this home that you all know as The San Lorenzo Times.

Second, let me introduce myself: my name is Iñaki Galdos, I am 48 years old, and I am from Oñati. Some of you have known me, as well as my family, for many years; some of you for a shorter amount of time, and for others I am a total stranger. As a footnote, I am including a photo from September 1974, showing my first contact with people from Boise.

I won’t go into further introductions here, but if you want to know a little more about me you can follow this link to the Staff section of the magazine that I edit.

Basque Tribune Staff

The reason I am writing this is also known to some of you: in honor of the 40th anniversary of your arrival I Oñati, I am writing a book that will be presented at the Jaialdi festival in Boise in July, 2015 and at the fiestas in Oñati in September of the same year.

I have already spent several months reviewing the newspaper archives in the Basque Country, reviewing the archives of the Agustinian fathers in Oñati, the Pat Bieter archives at BSU, etc. I have also been collecting personal interviews about that experience. And the truth is that I am very excited because I believe this will be a very good book.

I am also considering the possibility of making a documentary film with a Basque production company called Txintxua Films:

Txintxua Films

ETB (Basque public television) has already officially agreed to finance part of the film, but it is still not fully funded. However, if we are able to obtain the required funds, we will make a 50-minute documentary. The decision about this will be made during the next few months.

I was recently in Boise (it was my third visit there) but I am preparing for a longer stay during which I will put together part of the book, collect interviews, photographs, etc.

So, with this letter I am requesting your help. Some of you are already working with me, but I would like to extend my request to the entire group. Here is my email:

galdosira@gmail.com

Also, I would like to know if any of you will be traveling to the Basque Country in the next few months, and more specifically to Oñati. I would be interested in taking pictures, and collecting interviews and material “in situ” at San Lorenzo. I know of some who will be going, but possibly not of everyone with plans. Those of you who live in the Basque Country will be easier to contact.

That is all for now. I thank you all very much for your attention, and I will continue to be in contact.

Iñaki

Many of you have been back to Oñati, San Sebastian, Bilbao, and other parts of Euskadi and even Spain. Many of you will be going over in the next few years, and some of you are going as soon as this summer. How about some recommendations and reviews…Continue
