Edurne Pasaban (Tolosa, 1973) has climbed the world’s “eight-thousanders”. Today she reached the fourteenth: Shisha Pangma (8,027 meters). When it was 7:30 in the Basque Country and 11:30 there, she had already reached the top. Other Basque mountaineers Alex Txikon and Asier Izagirre, and Juan Madariaga with the Spanish television group Al Filo de lo Imposible, have also reached the summit with a different expedition. They have communicated that they are fine.

"Thank you very much to everybody” expressed the mountaineer from Tolosa, "and also to all those who have helped me along the way”.

Pasaban is the second woman to climb the fourteen highest peaks in the world. Oh Eun-Sun [from South Korea] became the first on April 27, after summiting Annapurna. Her first “eight-thousander” was Gasherbrum II.
Oh Eun-Sun was the 21st mountaineer to climb the fourteen “eight-thousanders”, and the first woman ever. The first man to claim that honor was Reinhold Messner, 24 years ago. One of the first Basque climbers to achieve it was Juanito Oiarzabal in 1999.

Pasaban and others set out last night from the third camp and they had about a seven-hour climb to reach the top. She had attempted Shisha Pangma on four previous occasions.

By 8:50 they had descended to the ridge of the mountain, after completing the most difficult section, reaching the third camp (7,300 meters) later. There they picked up their gear and decided to continue the descent; it is even possible that they will reach the base camp today.
