"Ongi etorri, Linda! Welcome at last to the SLT! I've been hoping you'd show up here for some time — since meeting your sister-in-law, Mainttoni, shortly after arriving in Oñati in 2008. (My, how the years are flying by!)…"

About me:
Making my dream to retire in Oñati a reality! .... Retired from a career in credit analysis in commercial finance (leasing) in California and Nevada. ... My short-term goal is to kick my "castellano" up to the next level, and of course, to get a working-level knowledge of "euskera." (Still a near zero in that department.) Longer term, I'm working on a project to create a digital, multimedia map of Euskal Herria (all seven provinces). Learning a lot about the Basque Country in the process. If it is ever completed — still a big "if" — you'll all be among the first to know! Hint: If you're not already a Mac Fanatic, this would be a good time to upgrade to a REAL computer, and be ready for Version 1.0 of "EuskoMapa!" (2,792 — as of 2017 — place names and counting!)

Stir-Crazy — 10 Months in Euskadi!

BY: Guillermo (Bill) Yriberri

Has it been 10 months already in the Basque Country? It must be, because the novelty seems to be wearing off. I feel almost like a real citizen of this land once again (1974 - 1975). That may also be why I'm taking a critical eye to a lot I see ....

Like this afternoon. I'm cooking a dish that could use a little tomato sauce, but the cupboard is bare. "Oh, that's right," I remember, "I can open… Continue

Bill - do you still live in Onati? Amazing that you retired there ... congratulations! I've been back just once, but am hoping to get there in late June/early July of 2011 with Sarah Taylor, Suzanne Gamboa and maybe Joan Winder. It would be wonderful to see you! I loved the photos of Rob and Anne's recent trip there. I hope you're well and happy ... Kathy

Hi Bill, This is a great site. I've been perusing it at length this evening. I wish I had more opportunity to be using what Spanish I have left. I do get to practice once a week at Chapala's Mex. restaurant. They are kind there and speak slowly. It's still find their Sinaloan dialect difficult to decipher. As for Basque well that is mostly a complete wash. At any rate it's great to hear from you and to see that you are retired in Spain. Brave man! One of these next springs I intend to return for a visit. Art

Bill--Anne and I will be teaching in Sarajevo, Bosnia for the next two years with QSI. We're retired now from public school teaching. Yeah! It would be fun to see you if/when we visit the Basque Country while we're in Europe. Seems like just yesterday when we were teaching the Celaya girls English.
Your turn--Rob and Anne

So, Bill, this is silly for us to be communicating via Facebook, don´t you think? Maybe we can sit down and have a real coffee and not a cyber one. I live next to Aloña Driving school - 635748415 is my cell number. If Mike B. is in town maybe we can get together. Debora/Debbie

Hi Bill,
What a nice surprise to hear from you. How is it being back in Onati?
I have recurring dreams about being back there. I've been living in SF since late 70's though took 2 years off to live in Ecuador (taught English). I got more grounded in the 80's and got a master's in social work. I've been working in the Mission District for 20 years now doing mental health work.
I recently got together with Kathy, Joan and Sarah; we've also had larger reunions including Suzie, Connie and Diane. I really did feel younger. We (the group) are tentatively planning on visiting Onati the summer of 2011. My daughter will graduate from high school then and I so much want to show her the Basque country.
Best wishes.
Stay in touch.
Susan
